Blackstrap Lake is approximately 10 miles in length and is surrounded by a 1500 acre provincial park. Blackstrap is a man made water reservoir, developed in the 1960’s for irrigation, recreational and water storage. A canal linking Blackstrap to the South Saskatchewan River, maintains a constant level of fresh, river water in the lake. This eliminates the need for spring runoff to recharge the lake water levels.
Blackstrap is home to a number of sports and recreational facilities, including a man made mountain build for the 1971 Canadian Winter Games. The mountain is open for spots activities summer and winter, including downhill skiing and snowboarding. Windsurfing, tubing, and skiing are popular at the lake. Whatever the wind direction, a quiet spot on the lake can be found.
The lake has excellent fishing, and is stocked with perch, pickerel, and pike. Summer and winter the lake is an active spot for fishermen of all ages. Fish derbies at the lake provide an added level of competition for the sport fishermen.
Blackstrap Park is home to a number of wild birds and native wildlife species. Indie Lake, at the south end of Blackstrap has become a Ducks Unlimited Wildlife sanctuary. It is unusual not to see pelicans, an array of blue birds, robins, meadow larks and a host of others at the park.
